Sustainability

As an animal-loving paper enterprise, our designs are a celebration of nature, wildlife and all its diversity. We care very much about our beautiful planet and are committed as a company, to reducing our environmental impact significantly in 2020.  As a product-based business, our main area of focus will be on continuing to reduce our use of single use plastic to wrap our cards and package orders.

‘Naked Cards’

The conversation around cello wrapping cards within the industry has been a complex one and it’s taken us time to decide on a solution that feels right for us. We sent out a ‘naked card’ survey to 100 of our regular indie customers in 2019, and the feedback was varied. The consistent concern was that cards might get damaged if they were displayed without plastic. We have since done a ‘naked’ trial with various indies, a few of whom were sceptical and worried about damage, but in fact they reported no more damage than cello wrapped cards and positive feedback from their customers who were happy to be buying products with less single use plastic.

Our Plastic Policy for 2020 and Beyond

All new designs from our 2020 launches and onwards will be plastic free. As standard, our cards will be clasped with an easy peel branded paper clasp to keep the card and envelope together. For now, trade units of 6 will still be grouped with a plastic cello to prevent damage during transit or when stored in stock rooms.

We will be phasing in clasped cards as we do reprints throughout the year, so orders may contain both cello wrapped and clasped cards whilst we run down our stock. We feel this is the best way to minimise waste and transition to our new ‘naked’ look.

We are proud now to be able to deliver orders without any excess plastic packaging. The cardboard boxes, paper tape and recycled paper padding we use are all fully recyclable.

CARDS & PRINTS

  • All of our cards and prints are printed onto FSC-certified board that is made in a paper mill in the Lake District.
  • Many of our ranges are printed without any additional finishes or embellishments and are fully recyclable.
  • We have two new ranges for 2020 that have gold foil details.  For these cards, due to the increased waste produced in manufacturing, we are working with a printer that offsets 100% of their carbon.  The surface area covered with foil is so small that the cards can be fully recycled without removing the foiled areas.
  • Our foil supplier is the first foil company to be certified as ZeroFoil2Landfill compliant – A scheme backed by the BPF.

PRINTING

  • Most of our cards are digitally printed, locally in the UK.
  • Digital presses do not emit harmful emissions as films. Spray powders or cleaning solvents are not used and they do not have the same solid waste disposal as their offset counterparts.
  • When we have cards printed in quantities of more than 1000 per design, they are litho-printed.

PAINTING

  • Louise paints onto an FSC-certified, 300gsm, acid free watercolour paper.
  • Materials include, watercolour, gouache, acrylic and drawing ink.

ENVELOPES

  • Our Kraft envelopes are made from FSC certified, recycled paper.
  • Our coloured envelopes are made from FSC certified paper.
  • All of our envelopes are easily recycled.

CELLOPHANE BAGS

  • All of our nationwide accounts, including Paperchase, John Lewis, Waterstones and Waitrose stock our cards 'naked'.  This has reduced our plastic cello use substantially.
  • New designs launched in January 2020 will be clasped with an easy peel branded paper clasp to keep the card and envelope together.  This clasp is fully recyclable and will not leave any residue on the board.
  • For the rest of our cards, we will be running down our cello-wrapped stock so as not to waste it, but all reprints of existing designs will be clasped.
  • Trade units of 6 are grouped with a cello bag to prevent damage during transit.
  • We currently use 30-Micron Polypropylene cellophane bags which can be recycled through council refuse collection facilities.
  • We have considered biodegradable and compostable alternatives but do not feel this is a good solution for us. Compostable films will not necessarily biodegrade when placed in landfill due to the absence of oxygen and most are unable to be composted in a home-compost.  If they were to end up at recycling plants, they would likely be removed and put into landfill as they look identical to plastic film. The very short ‘shelf-life’ on these bags could also create a huge amount of waste if cards and bags begin to disintegrate before they are sold.

ADMINISTRATION

  • We are a paperless office; our work is computer/web-based including digital file sharing and using online accounting software.

DISPATCHING ORDERS

  • We use recyclable cardboard boxes and paper tape to secure the boxes closed.
  • Paper padding is used inside the box if there is any space left around the cards.
  • Orders are packaged and dispatched from our family-run fulfilment centre in Gloucestershire, UK.

DISCONTINUED LINES

  • We run through stock of discontinued lines via sales on our website.
  • Some of our discontinued cards are distributed to a few local hospices. These hospices are not charity shops or in any way in competition with high street shops.
